Flemingâs Rules

Flemingâs left-hand and right-hand rules are used for the relationship between the directions of current flow, motion and magnetic field in electric motors and dynamos respectively.
The rules are useful mnemonics for students.
The rules, illustrated below, are named after the English electrical engineer, inventor of the thermionic valve (1900), who devised them.
Flemingâs left-hand rule is used for electric motors. Hold left hand with the thumb, first and second fingers at right angles. Directions are as indicated. Use the right-hand for dynamos. This is called Flemingâs right-hand rule.
